The Modern Foreign Language that is currently being taught at St. Katherine's school from the Year 1 to the Year 6 classes is French. The children have been showing a great interest and enjoyment in learning a foreign language and finding out more about a different culture. They are not inhibited to speak or participate in the games and activities. This enjoyment is also reflected in the number of clubs: the staff were able to offer three different French clubs and a Spanish club in the school year 2010/2011.
In Year 1 and 2 the children learn to understand and speak in French through a variety of songs, games and books.
In Year 3 and 4 the children then start to read and write in French with "Tout-Le-Monde". This excellent on-line programme offers the children the opportunity to practise their French at home via the internet, using a variety of fun activities. Perhaps you would like to learn with them?
In Year 5 and 6 the children start to work towards certificates. The "ASSET" certificates are recognised by the secondary schools and give the children the chance to show their abilities.
Some great websites to practise French are:
KS 1 and 2: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryfrench
KS 2: www.tout-le-monde.co.uk
