At St Katherine’s School and Nursery, we are working hard to provide the most exciting and engaging literacy environment possible. We want each pupil to develop a love of reading, a love of communicating and to be confident, articulate writers from an early age.
Reading is vitally important to us and has a high status within the school. We are aiming to transform our reading environment to foster a love of reading many different kinds of literature. Our exciting online reading scheme ‘Bug Club’ is wonderfully motivating for the children. Each child has their own log in and books selected to support ability and challenge.
We teach phonics in Reception and KS1 using ‘Letters and Sounds’ and continue to focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar as your child moves through the school. We currently use Spelling Shed to support spelling throughout the school and each child has their own login to practise their spelling through games and challenges.
We are developing our curriculum with a focus on high quality texts. Classes use a book to hook the focus on for reading and also to stimulate writing opportunities. The children are encouraged to write for a range of purposes and view literacy and language as a powerful means of self-expression.
At St Katherine’s School and Nursery, we want to create readers and writers for life, with the skills to succeed and fulfil their potential in the next stage of their education.

Bug Club
Our school has subscribed to Bug Club, a fantastic online reading world which we will be using in addition to our current reading provision. The children can access their own personalised page on the website using their login and password details. The school code is ccxm. Your child’s class teacher will allocate e-books which they can enjoy reading at home with you. Follow the link to take you directly to the Bug Club website. http://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk
